Meet our 2026 Apprentices

We think it's crucial to keep helping young people find their place in the machining and engineering industry.

Here at Myriad Engineering, we always try to have at least two apprentices with us at any time, and it isn’t unusual for us to have three or four.

Partly this is a selfish thing – we always enjoy being able to offer our apprentices full time employment when they are qualified – but we also think it’s really important to grow the workforce and skill base of our industry, especially in the Wellington and Lower Hutt engineering sector.

Apprentices at Myriad gain experience across all aspects of precision engineering, design, machining and fabrication. We thought we’d introduce you to the apprentices that we currently have learning with us. We asked both our apprentices Ben and Sean a series of questions, and here are their answers.

Ben

How long have you been with myriad engineering?

Started in November so it’s a couple of months now.

What made you want to career in engineering?

I like the idea of working with my hands and problem solving. Making things is also very rewarding I find.

What attracted you to work for myriad?

I was attracted to myriad because it looked like a small friendly business with a great range of facilities.

What have you enjoyed most so far while working at myriad?

I really enjoyed designing and then programming parts in fusion 360.

Since you started what project or task are you most proud of, or what is the coolest item you’ve made?

I am most proud of how much I have learned in what feels like such a short space of time.

What are your outside interests?

I like being active playing sport and being in nature. I like fixing things. I am interested in learning how people used to do things/lived day-to-day.

Sean

How long have you been with myriad engineering?

Since November 2025, just after my Level 3 course ended at WelTec.

What made you want to career in engineering?

It was a combination of things really, I thought mechanical engineering would be more resistant to AI changes than other fields, and I love the satisfaction that comes with working with my hands.

But mainly it was spending time with my sister and her partner and seeing how genuinely happy and satisfied he was each day coming home from work at his mechanical engineering job. He always felt so accomplished and seemed like he really loved what he does. I wanted that for myself, and I do feel the same

What attracted you to work for myriad?

I got to do fabrication and machining in my pre trade, and much preferred machining. Myriad was right up there when I was researching local machining companies.

What have you enjoyed most so far while working at myriad?

Almost every day I learn a little technique or way of doing things that blows my mind. I feel very lucky to be working with these knowledgeable guys.

Since you started what project or task are you most proud of, or what is the coolest item you’ve made?

Man, if I showed you, it would look so lame haha! The part itself looked basic, but it consisted of so many little techniques and skills that are so new to me (like screw cutting, 30° chamfers, and left hand turning closed). I was really proud to put all the pieces together on that one.

What are your outside interests?

I love music cooking reading and DnD.
